He was Wellington's most valued intelligence officer in the Peninsular War recording enemy movements, composition and strength. To the French he was a dangerous spy fit only for a bullet or a rope, but as he operated at all times in uniform he could justly claim that he was an English officer going openly about his profession. Captured in Portgual, he posed a moral problem both to the French and to himself. How he resolved the dilemna and reacted to it makes a gripping and eventful story.
